๐Ÿ’ฐ Monetization

Sponsored by Poki. Poki is on a mission to create the ultimate online playground โ€“ where players and developers come together to play and create! Together with a growing 400+ game developer community and 90 million players each month, we're creating a new standard for web games. Interested in working together? Share your game with us!

Revenue Models

  • Paid downloads โ€” sell your game on Steam, itch.io, or app stores. The simplest model: players pay once and get the full game.
  • Free-to-play with ads โ€” common for web and mobile games. Rewarded ads (watch an ad for an in-game reward) are generally the most player-friendly ad format.
  • In-app purchases โ€” sell cosmetics, extra levels, quality-of-life improvements, or bonus content. Cosmetic-only purchases are the least controversial approach.
  • Subscriptions โ€” recurring payments for ongoing content or benefits.
  • Season passes โ€” time-limited content bundles that give players goals to work toward.

Publishers

Working with a publisher can provide funding, marketing, and distribution in exchange for a revenue share.

Selling PWAs on Stores

You can sell PWAs on native stores: Microsoft allows PWA submissions to the Windows Store, and Google supports wrapping PWAs in a Trusted Web Activity (TWA) for the Play Store (easily done with PWABuilder). The Digital Goods API enables Play Store billing from a TWA.
